During my time at MCAD, I developed a love for creating ink illustrations. Learn more about my process below.
The Source of Inspiration
In my Comic Art Materials and Techniques class, during the first part of each lesson we would have to ink an illustration provided to us by our teacher. For some reason, I decided that day to ink as much of the image as I could - and realized that I loved that style. From then on I decided to do my own illustration where I would use as much black ink as I could, and my own style formed.
Collage It Together
I love creating digital collages as well, so I decided to combine my techniques and create a rough digital collage of what I wanted to draw, and then sketch and ink onto paper what I had created digitally. I love silliness and surrealism so many of my drawings are curious yet fun.
Animals in Space
I love creating whimsical illustrations of animals in spacesuits, exploring the cosmos. It has an element of playfulness and silliness that I adore.
Calligraphy
In my Drawing 1 class I had the delight and privilege to have an instructor who was born and raised in China. He wanted to teach us about some of the art traditional to his home country so he taught us the basics of the form of calligraphy using the English alphabet. He assigned us work to write a phrase using this style and then illustrate it in ink.
Portraits
I also love to create portraits in ink. The use of black ink as the primary color gives the portraits an intensity that I adore.
